Boys Bug Quilt

So, I am hoping some of you amazing quilters can help me out. I may be jumping ahead of myself - especially with all the I Spy Quilts I have lined up, but I wanted to make a special quilt for a special boy. My mother is a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) to a sweet 12 year old boy with autism who lives in a group home. He loves all things bugs and insects. He doesn't much in this world, and I thought maybe he would like a special bug quilt to give him some comfort during rough times. I just don't really know where to begin. Here are some great bug fabrics I found below. Anyone have any simple designs for a twin size quilt that would be good for a 12 year old boy? Anyone know of any other great insect/bug fabric? Thank you!

  1. You could make a snowball I Spy or warm wishes pattern. I also have another quick and easy pattern. Email me if you want any of these patterns. That would be a wonderful gift for the young man.

    1. i like the snowball idea. fabric help: search for these at fat quarter shop: "meadow friends"
      "smirk"
      "grouchy ladybug"
      "sea zoologie"
      "froggin"
"critters" (although the last 2 might be too cutesy)...
some of the "retro basics" monster fabrics are bug-ish
"blue spider web" is on sale
      "very hungry caterpillar"
      "urban zoologie"

  2. One of the cutest ones I saw is the fabric cut into the shape of jars like the bugs are inside. I'll see if I can find one online.
    Have you been to www.bugfabric.com?
Hats off to your mom! My son has a foster child so I am familiar with CASA.

  3. for the quilt pattern, depending on his form of autism you might want to go for simple geometric forms, and not mix the colours too much - but that's hard to tell as "autism" is a very general description, try to find out more ...

  4. I think I've seen an Eric Carle spiders print that wasn't too childish at Fat Quarter Shop.

  5. I just made simple quilts for my boys. I used the charm square quilt on Elizabeth hartman's blog. She has instructions for twin size.

  6. I know this is late-- but I would make a bug jar quilt. http://www.flickr.com/photos/karrelbuck/175817260/ You can get elaborate like this one-- or very simple.

I would also (if possible) put his name in/on the quilt so someone else doesn't decide it is theirs.... just my .02.
